Walter was born in September 1872.  Walter's father was Josiah Welsby and his mother was (Ruth) Ellen Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Elizabeth, Maria and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1873 in Bolton.1
