Maria was born on March 9th, 1875 in Bolton.1  Maria's father was Josiah Welsby and her mother was (Ruth) Ellen Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Walter, John, Elizabeth and Sarah.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
