Sarah's father was Josiah Welsby and her mother was (Ruth) Ellen Shaw. Her paternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Walter, John, Elizabeth and Maria. She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
