John's father was Josiah Welsby and his mother was (Ruth) Ellen Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were Walter Welsby and Maria Bolton. He had a brother and three sisters, named Walter, Elizabeth, Maria and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the five children.  He died at 9 months old in December 1881 in Bolton.²
