Joseph's father was James Tomlinson and his mother was Mary Ann Healey. His paternal grandparents were James Tomlinson and Ann Craven. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Willie, George, Elizabeth, James, Ann and Mary. He was the oldest of the seven children.
