Mary was born in December 1866 in Newton Heath.1  Mary's father was James Tomlinson and her mother was Mary Ann Healey.  Her paternal grandparents were James Tomlinson and Ann Craven. She had five brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Willie, George, Elizabeth, James and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
