Richard's father was Robert Thomasson and his mother was Doris Ralphs.  His paternal grandparents were Paul Thomasson and Elizabeth Alice Thornley; his maternal grandparents were Richard Martin Ralphs and Mary Alice Entwistle. He had a brother named Robert.  He was the older of the two children.  He died at the age of 86 on December 21st, 2014 in Horwich.²
