Robert's father was Paul Thomasson and his mother was Elizabeth Alice Thornley. His maternal grandparents were Robert Thornley and Elizabeth Welsby. He had two sisters named Mary and Annie. He was the youngest of the three children. He died at the age of 75 in 1972.

- In 1925, Robert married Doris Ralphs at Bolton, St Philip
  
  In 1939, Robert and Doris Tommasson (42 & 41) are at 42 Highfield Rd, Farnworth. Doris is a Shop keeper. They have two assumed children (1939 census record obscured)
