Rachel was born in 1818 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on August 9th, 1818 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Rachel's father was James Taylor and her mother was Rachel Madther.  Her maternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Rachel Ogden. She had five brothers and a sister, named William, John, Peter, Thomas, William and Sarah.  She was the second youngest of the seven children.
