Mathew's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Sarah Cliffe.  His paternal grandparents were David Stocks and Sarah Brook. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin, Samuel, Job, Ann, Jinny, Sally, Hannah and Bathey.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 2 on June 10th, 1769 in Huddersfield.  He was buried on June 10th, 1769 at St. Peter (Huddersfield).¹
