Margaret was born in 1849. Margaret's father was George Stocks and her mother was Hannah Craven. Her paternal grandparents were David Stocks and Margaret Goldthorp. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Craven, George, Margaret, Elizabeth, Martha and Sarah. She was the second oldest of the seven children.
