Craven was born in 1856. Craven's father was George Stocks and his mother was Hannah Craven. His paternal grandparents were David Stocks and Margaret Goldthorp. He had a brother and five sisters, named George, Margaret, Margaret, Elizabeth, Martha and Sarah. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 35 in September 1891 in Taylor Hill. He was buried on September 19th, 1891 in Lockwood.¹¹
