David's father was Thomas Stocks and his mother was Hannah Batty. His paternal grandparents were David Stocks and Margaret Goldthorp. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Rhodes, Fred, Sarah, Mary and Hannah. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
