John was born in September 1840 R Cliviger & Mereclough.1  John's father was George Slater and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead.  His paternal grandparents were John Slater and Susan Britcliffe. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Benjamin, Jane, Hannah and Susannah.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in December 1841 R Cliviger & Mereclough.1
