Jane was born in 1827 in Cliviger & Mereclough.1  Jane's father was George Slater and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Whitehead.  Her paternal grandparents were John Slater and Susan Britcliffe. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, John, Benjamin, Hannah and Susannah.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
