Thomas' father was Arthur Reade and his mother was Mary Thomasson. His maternal grandparents were Paul Thomasson and Elizabeth Alice Thornley. He had three brothers named Robert, Arthur and Eric. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 86 in 1995.
