Robert's father was Arthur Reade and his mother was Mary Thomasson.  His maternal grandparents were Paul Thomasson and Elizabeth Alice Thornley. He had three brothers named Thomas, Arthur and Eric.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 78 in February 1992 in Bolton.²
