Mary's father was John Postans and her mother was Martha Reynolds. Her paternal grandparents were John Leetward and Honor (Honoria) Postans. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Henry, Anne and Jane. She was the oldest of the seven children.
