John was born in July 1840 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on September 20th, 1840 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  John's father was Miles Pollitt and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Openshaw Greenhalgh. He had a brother and three sisters, named James, Ann, Ellen and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Esther and Sarah.
