Ellen was born in March 1843 in Darcy Lever and her baptism took place on May 28th, 1843 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Ellen's father was Miles Pollitt and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Openshaw Greenhalgh. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Ann and Mary.  She was the third oldest of the five children. She had two half-sisters named Esther and Sarah.  She died at the age of 15 in 1858 in Darcy Lever.2
