James was born in December 1844 in Darcy Lever.1  James' father was Miles Pollitt and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Openshaw Greenhalgh. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Ann, Ellen and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had two half-sisters named Esther and Sarah.
