Mary was born in December 1846 in Darcy Lever and her baptism took place on March 14th, 1847 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Mary's father was Miles Pollitt and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Openshaw Greenhalgh. She had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Ann and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the five children. She had two half-sisters named Esther and Sarah.
