William was born in 1899 in Bolton.1  William's father was James Pendlebury and his mother was Margaret Ann Dennis.  His paternal grandparents were James Pendlebury and Hannah Yates. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Harry, James, Hannah, Florence, Maria, Ethel, Margaret and Lena.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
