Mary's father was William Parkinson and her mother was Hannah Buckley. Her maternal grandparents were Jonathan Buckley and Mary Webster. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, William, John, Thomas, Emily and Sarah. She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
