Thomas was born in September 1846 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was Job Openshaw and his mother was Alice Haslam.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Openshaw and Jane Tomlinson. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Job and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four children.
