John was born in September 1848 in Bolton.1  John's father was Job Openshaw and his mother was Alice Haslam.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Openshaw and Jane Tomlinson. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Job and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
