Thomas was born in 1823 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on September 21st, 1823 at St. Peter's (Bolton). Thomas' father was Thomas Openshaw and his mother was Catherine (Cassandra) Haslam.  His paternal grandparents were James Openshaw and Mary Holt; his maternal grandparents were John Haslam and Alice Kay (TBC). He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Job, William, John, Alice and Mary.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
