Mary was born in 1818 in Manchester and her baptism took place on January 3rd, 1819 at the St. Matthew (Little Lever).1  Mary's father was Thomas Openshaw and her mother was Catherine (Cassandra) Haslam.  Her paternal grandparents were James Openshaw and Mary Holt; her maternal grandparents were John Haslam and Alice Kay (TBC). She had five brothers and a sister, named John, Job, Thomas, William, John and Alice.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
