Jonathan, known as John, was born on November 7th, 1813 in Darcy Lever and his baptism took place on December 2nd, 1813 at the St. Matthew (Little Lever).1  John's father was Thomas Openshaw and his mother was Catherine (Cassandra) Haslam.  His paternal grandparents were James Openshaw and Mary Holt; his maternal grandparents were John Haslam and Alice Kay (TBC). He had four brothers and two sisters, named Job, Thomas, William, John, Alice and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
