William was born in June 1867 in Blackrod.1  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Walkden.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, James, George, Amelia and Ellen.  He was the third youngest of the seven known children.
