James was born in March 1865 in Blackrod.1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Walkden.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, William, George, Amelia and Ellen.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
