Amelia was born in December 1862 in Blackrod.1  Amelia's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Walkden.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, John, James, William, George and Ellen.  She was the third oldest of the seven known children.
