Ellen was born in September 1869 in Blackrod.1  Ellen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Walkden.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Leyland and Ellen Hope. She had five brothers and a sister, named James, John, James, William, George and Amelia.  She was the second youngest of the seven known children.
