William was born in September 1869 in Bolton.1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Doud. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, Edward, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sophia.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
