Edward was born in March 1863 in Bolton.1  Edward's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Doud. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sophia.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
