Thomas was born in December 1855 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Doud. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Edward, William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sophia.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
