Elizabeth was born in December 1864 in Bolton.1  Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Doud. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Thomas, Edward, William, Mary, Sarah, Margaret and Sophia.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
