Thomas' father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Doud. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Edward, William, Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret and Sophia.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.  He died in 1858 in Bolton.¹
