William was born in March 1849 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on November 4th, 1849 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Ramsden.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Peter and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named John, Fanny, Mary and Harriet.
