Sarah's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Ramsden. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. She had three brothers named William, John and Peter. She was the second oldest of the four children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named John, Fanny, Mary and Harriet.
