John was born in May 1844 in Little Bolton.1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Betsy (Betty) Hall.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ann Brabin. He had two sisters named Mary and Harriet. He had an adopted sister named Fanny. He had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named William, John, Peter and Sarah.  He died as an infant at 3 months old in August 1844 in Little Bolton.  He was buried on August 14th, 1844 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2 1
