Thomas' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Hannah (Betsy) Kay. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named William, Samuel, Thomas, Herbert, Ernest, Amelia, Martha, Annie, Jesse, Matilda, Lizzie and Lawraett. He was the fourth youngest of the thirteen children.
