Stephen was born in December 1860 in Little Bolton.1  Stephen's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Dobson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Fielding. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Agnes, Mary and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
