George was born in June 1859 in Little Bolton.1  George's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Dobson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Fielding. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Stephen, Joseph, Thomas, Mary, Agnes, Mary and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
