Joseph's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane Dobson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Fielding. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Stephen, Thomas, Mary, Agnes, Mary and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 30 in September 1893 in Bolton.
