Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Jane Dobson.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Sarah Fielding. She had four brothers and three sisters, named George, Stephen, Joseph, Thomas, Agnes, Mary and Sarah.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  She died in 1865 in Little Bolton.¹
