Sarah's father was <unknown> and her mother was Martha Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Mary Rostron. She had a brother and two sisters, named George, Richard and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the four children.

General Notes
- The 1881 census shows Richard was a base son of Martha Mather. It is reasonable to assume that Sarah J is his sister (together in 1871).
