Samuel's father was Edwin Mather and his mother was Sarah Stones. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Edwin, Charles, Martha, Mary, Florence and Lillian. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
