Florence's father was Edwin Mather and her mother was Sarah Stones.  Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Edwin, Samuel, Charles, Martha, Mary and Lillian.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.

‌Florence and Edwin were married in a religious ceremony in June 1906 in Barton upon Irwell.²
