John's father was Edwin Mather and his mother was Sarah Stones. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Edwin, Samuel, Charles, Martha, Mary, Florence and Lillian. He was the oldest of the eight children.
